Gr8 Tips for Gr8 Kids
# 12 Teflon Coated Rhino Skinned Hoodie
There will be times when your kids “Don’t like you” and they may even verbalize this with strong language such as “I hate you.” However you need wear your Teflon coated Rhino skinned hoodie. That way nothing will stick or get through the tough thick skin to hurt your heart and mind. Remember you are doing a great job and they are having an off day. Don’t take it personally! Keep on loving your kids and show them that you are there for them.
# 2 Entertain Me
The instant gratification culture of today I think reduces a child’s attention span. They get bored so quickly and many parents feel they have to “Entertain” their kids or have a host of activities planned out.
This may come as a revelation to some, but you don’t have to be under pressure to entertain your kids all the time.
Give the kids their own time and space where they can safely use their imagination or play with their toys.
This takes the pressure both sides. Also this is actually good for both you and your children.
Great Tips for Great Kids
# 1 Slo-Mo
Way too often we rush through the day but have you ever considered the way of a child? They walk along and everything is fascinating to them. They want to look at the bugs, cars, butterflies and everything else on their journey. Slow down and look at the world through their eyes. Yep it can be frustrating if you are trying to get them to school but WHEN you can, walk at the child’s pace and see the world as they see it. When you do this it will give you a totally new perspective on life.
Shelbyart is a newly formed business which focuses on creative mentoring through the medium of art and craft. It was originally set up by Michelle Williams who realised on her own journey of discovery that craft and art was a powerful tool to help unlock people’s potential. She has two boys with severe and complex needs, and found that most of their education through their schooling was aimed at their academic achievement.
Michelle discovered that a massive key to unlocking her two boys was to help them discover their creative side and to nurture this. She then coupled this with a mentoring approach, helping her children solve problems for themselves, helping them to take calculated risks and to see the positives in every day. They are both now making amazing progress, having used creativity as a spring board to build self-confidence.
Michelle has been an unpaid carer for 18 years now, her life had to be put on hold while she helped her family grow and become as independent as they could. This is still an on-going process but she never thought that mentoring would work so well for her children. She sees the potential in everyone and helps them see that potential for themselves.
Shelbyart has become a vessel for others to make progress not only through mentoring, but when coupled with creativity something amazing seems to happen. The Mentees grow in confidence at their own rate. Sometimes a client may only attend one session and this is enough for them to be able to make a significant change in their own life, to carry them forward into the path they would like to pursue. Other mentees need more support to realise they are gifted in specific abilities. The great thing is that Shelbyart helps promote community and unity amongst those with no previous experience to established artists.
“It is great to be able to see a network of growth and self-confidence growing inside each individual we work with,” Michelle says. “Self- Development is key to Shelbyart and we firmly put the power of life choices into our mentees hands.” We work in a non-judgemental way and help signpost our mentees to appropriate organisations and courses that may be able to help them develop. One of the main mediums Michelle works with in her own work is rubbish. In a metaphorical way, the people she often works with are written off for one reason or another. Turning rubbish into something beautiful is a pleasure……

In a rut
“In 1992, a shipping container fell overboard on its way from China to the United States, losing 29,000 rubber ducks in the Pacific Ocean. Ten months later, the first of these rubber ducks was washed ashore on the Alaskan Coast. Since then, these ducks have been found in Hawaii, South America, Australia, and travelling slowly inside the Arctic Ice. But 2,000 of the ducks were caught up in the North Pacific Gyre. A vortex of currents moving between Japan, Alaska, the Pacific Northwest and the Aleutian Islands. Items that get caught in the gyre usually stay in the gyre. Doomed to travel the same path, forever circling in the same waters, but not always. Their paths can be altered by a change in the weather, a storm at sea, a chance encounter with a pod of whales, Twenty years after the rubber ducks were lost at sea, they are still arriving on beaches around the world. And the number of ducks in the gyre has decreased, which means it’s possible to break free, even after years of circling the same waters. It’s possible to find a way to shore.”

For many we feel like this. Just going round in circles or stuck in a rut. It can be a rut of work, or eating habits, or your life style. The longer it goes on the more we assign ourselves that we will never break free. Are you doomed to an endless swirling of boredom, excuses, no hope and bleakness? NO! The answer is most certainly not. You don’t have to live your life like this anymore. The first thing to break free from your rut is to recognise that you are in a rut. Next you need to desire to be free. If you don’t really yearn to be free then you probably will stay in your rut. The hard bit comes next, that is where you have to do something about it. Sometimes you will need an outside push; like a pod of whales to break you free. However it is done, YOU CAN BREAK FREE FROM YOUR RUT and never have to go back to the same routine everyday. It is possible! It is possible to make it to shore!

Dec 1st – 7th saw “Anger Awareness” week in the UK. Most of us get angry at some point but for others it is a real on going issue. My programme “The Hulk Within” deals with “ANGER”. It helps you understand this beast called anger. It answers the questions: What is anger? What are triggers? What are the warning signs of an imminent outburst? It also gives clear practical steps in how to deal with anger in a safe environment and defuse potential volatile situations.

The Week Nov 19th – 23rd was UK’s National Anti-Bullying week. I spent a lot of time in schools doing Anti-Bullying assemblies with puppets.
Here are some tips on Anti-Bullying.
# Tell a Teacher, Parent or a Grown Up.
# Write it down as soon as you can afterwards.
# Stand up to the bullies by telling them to “STOP, I don’t like this”.
# Get a friend to stand up against the bullies with you.
# Call the child help lines.
# A biggy which sometimes needs a lot strenght but needs to be done: Forgive those that bully you.
I’m not a flower person but I love poppies. I love to see them in their vibrant,
vivacious flamboyant gentle dance in the wind. They brighten up the fields and
Most people just think of red poppies but poppies come in a vast array of
colours. Red Poppies are synonymous with Remembrance Day. White Poppies are a
symbol of peace. Poppies are quite useful in various arenas of life. Poppy seeds are
used in cooking and baking. Some poppies produce opiates that are used in some
However the most fascinating fact about poppies for me is all about the
seeds. Poppy seeds can buried deep in the ground for years and do nothing, then
SUDDENLY they burst in to life. I know not the reason or rhyme for this but what a
brilliant picture it is for us. Many people have dreams or goals for life but often they
are forgotten, buried deep within. Those dreams are nothing but a seed with no life
and nothing growing. Maybe it has been such a long time that it is all but forgotten,
just a vague distant whisper. Maybe you have been repeatedly told that dream will
never happen. Maybe you have been told over and over that you don’t have the skills
or talent to see that goal or dream become a reality. It then just crumbles never given
the opportunity to grow. Maybe people laughed at your dream or told you; “You could
never do that”. Or, “You are worthless and your dreams are stupid”. What ever the
reason, it is something that hinder, stunts or stops growth. For far too many people
their dreams remain dead or dormant to them and won’t have any possibility to grow
and bloom into some thing beautiful.
So let me ask you what dormant dreams are buried deep within you?
Do you want to hear some fantastic news?
Of course you do.
YOUR DREAMS DON’T HAVE TO STAY DORMANT ANY LONGER. You can start believing in them once again or
start believing that you can achieve these goals and dreams. You can bring about
that “SUDDENLY” burst of life by Cultivating and Nurturing your dreams so that they
can grow and bloom. Water your dreams. Feed your dreams and let their life fill your
life until your dreams are like those beautiful flowers dancing in the wind.
Seven Wonders of the World.
I don’t know where this story originated from, but I really love it.
A teacher asked a group of students to list what they thought were the “Seven Wonders of the World”. Though there was some disagreements, the following received the most votes:
The Pryamids of Egypt
The Taj Mahal
The Grand Canyon
Empire State building
St. Peter’s Basilica
The Great Wall of China
While gathering the votes, the teacher noticed that one student hadn’t handed in her paper so she asked her if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied “Yes a little I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there are so many”. The teacher asked her to show what she had written and then maybe she could help her to decide. The student handed her paper to the teacher, and this is what she had written;
The Seven Wonders of the World are…
To See, to Hear, to Touch, to Taste, to Feel, to Laugh and to Love.
The teacher read the list to a stunned, quiet class.
What would you have put down as the Seven Wonders of the World?
No matter how grand things are they pale in comparison to the Real Seven Wonders of the World as listed by this girl. These truly are the most wondrous things we can have and see in our lives. If you have these Seven Wonders then you can fully and truly appreciate the other “Wonders of the World”.
